There is only one GST/HST rate in Canada: 5%. Supplies are either taxed at that rate, zero-rated or exempt. The standard rate is below the Americas average of 14.2% and shared with 5 other countries in our list.

Canada charges a 5% federal GST. Some provinces combine it with a provincial portion into a Harmonized Sales Tax (HST): 13% in Ontario, 14% in Nova Scotia and 15% in New Brunswick, Newfoundland and Labrador and Prince Edward Island. Other provinces add a separate provincial sales tax.

Adding GST/HST to a net price
GST/HST = net × 5 / 100
Gross = net × 1.05
Removing GST/HST from a gross price
Net = gross / 1.05
GST/HST = gross − net
A common mistake is to take 5% off the gross price. That gives the wrong figure: the GST/HST inside a gross price is only 4.76% of it.
